Getting in summer shape without the rush: why a calm start takes you further

Spring is already halfway through when that familiar thought crosses your mind: I should get into summer shape. You open an article that promises results in two weeks: a strict diet, daily workouts and a complete lifestyle overhaul. You close it as quickly as you opened it.
Sound familiar? Good. Because today we are doing it differently.
What if getting ready for summer wasn’t a crisis?
It is easy to link summer shape with rush and pressure. But what if it meant something else entirely: better stamina, more energy, and a body that really enjoys the summer, instead of one that has simply survived some kind of crash regime?
Lasting change is built slowly, and that is good news. Your body responds better to sensible training than to a short burst of overload. Two or three sessions a week over several weeks do more than two weeks flat out followed by a long break.
So start early and start calmly. When you don’t rush, your progress carries on through the summer instead of stopping as soon as the first enthusiasm fades.
Why is strength training summer shape’s secret weapon?
The gym may sound like a winter idea, but strength training is one good way to get ready for summer. It strengthens your muscles and can make everyday life feel lighter.
Stronger muscles can show in daily life: on a summer outing you can walk further, and playing with the kids doesn’t wear you out in the same way.
You don’t need a complicated programme. Two or three sessions a week can be plenty, as long as the programme suits you. As a member you can ask for a free training programme. Tell us your goals and your starting level in the form. The staff create the programme with the help of AI, check it and email it to you as a PDF within 24 hours. The programme does not include personal technique coaching at the gym. 💪
All everyday movement counts, including the stairs
You don’t have to do gym sessions every day. Everyday movement matters more than many people think: cycling to work, a walk at lunchtime, the stairs instead of the lift. They feel small, but over the weeks they add up to something significant.
A good rule of thumb: if you sit a lot, add movement to your day first. Then you get even more out of your gym sessions. The two complement each other.
Eat enough: your body needs fuel
Strict restriction feels effective, but it can eat into your energy just when you need it most. When you train, your body needs enough energy, protein and nutrients.
✔ Eat enough protein: it supports muscle development and keeps you full for longer.
✔ Eat regularly: big hunger easily leads to overeating.
✔ Don’t be afraid of carbohydrates: they are one of the body’s most important fuels for training.
✔ Put as many vegetables on your plate as you can: it is often an easy and useful change.
There is nothing mysterious about this. When you eat enough and eat a varied diet, your body has the energy to train, and you get more out of your training. It is a more sustainable equation than punishing yourself while hungry.
What does the goal actually mean?
“Summer shape” is a rather vague goal. Instead, try asking yourself: How do I want to feel in the middle of June?
Maybe it is “I can cycle to Grandma’s with the kids without running out of breath”. Or “I can climb the stairs to the office without my legs turning to jelly”. These are concrete, achievable things, and that is exactly why they work better than a vague pressure about how you look.
When the goal is your own and realistic, your motivation lasts even after the first enthusiasm is over.
Keep your summer training alive on holiday too
It is easy to let your training routine slip during the summer holiday. A couple of weeks without gym sessions usually doesn’t hurt, but stopping completely makes coming back in the autumn harder than it needs to be.
On holiday, one or two sessions a week can be enough (outdoor exercise, swimming, walks). Nostelema is open 24/7. With a basic membership you get in with your phone, using the OnTheMove app, from 5:00 to 23:00. The night hours are there if you want them, with a one-time €8 24/7 upgrade. So you can usually find a good moment, even when your diary would otherwise be full. No separate card needed.
Getting ready for summer doesn’t require a hard rush or a perfect plan. It requires starting early enough, bringing movement into everyday life, and eating properly. After that, you are allowed to enjoy the journey.
Every workout brings you closer to a summer when you really have energy. So move for the good of your body, your mind and your future summer memories!
If you want a clear starting plan, the AI-PT or a personal gym programme is an easy way to get going. Welcome to train at your own pace. 🙂
