Muscles grow at rest: recovery in gym training

You feel tired the moment you wake up, the spark has gone and your training is losing its punch, even though you are doing everything “right”: going to the gym diligently and never skipping a session. So what is going on?

Sound familiar? If so, the reason may lie in exactly the time you are not at the gym.

In the gym you build the challenge, at rest you build the muscle

Here is one of the most remarkable truths about training: the workout itself does not grow your muscles. It only starts the process. When you lift weights, your muscles are put under load, and your body adapts to that load while you recover.

If you don’t give your body time for this repair work, you are like a builder who knocks down yesterday’s wall. So recovery in gym training is not laziness. It is just as much a part of training as the gym session itself.

What does overtraining really feel like?

Your body is good at sending messages when it needs more rest. The problem is that as a beginner it is easy to misread those messages and keep grinding on in the name of persistence.

Here are a few signs worth reacting to:

✔ You stay tired even if you sleep in
✔ Weights feel heavier than they did a week ago
✔ Your motivation disappears or you get irritated more easily
✔ Small aches and pains that won’t ease off
✔ Falling asleep gets harder or your sleep is broken

These can be a sign that your body needs more time to recover. If the symptoms continue for a long time or worry you, talk to a healthcare professional.

A little magic happens while you sleep

Sleep is one of the most important tools for recovery, and yet it is the thing we skimp on most easily. During sleep your body releases growth hormone, and sleep supports the renewal and recovery of muscle tissue.

How much sleep you need is individual, but for many people about 7–9 hours of sleep a night is right. According to the activity recommendations of the UKK Institute (a Finnish health research institute), sleep is not something to skimp on.

A few practical tips for better sleep:

✔ Wind down before bed: screens off half an hour before, if you can manage it
✔ Keep your bedroom cool and dark: it helps your body temperature drop in the right way
✔ Alcohol can make your sleep worse, even if it seems relaxing at first
✔ A hard evening workout right before bed can keep you too alert: the afternoon or early evening often works better. (With a basic membership the gym is yours every day from 5:00 to 23:00, so you can choose your time at your leisure.)

A rest day doesn’t mean lying on the sofa

This is where many beginners go wrong: a rest day feels like a failure or like laziness, so they avoid it. In reality it is one of the most important decisions you can make for your body.

A rest day doesn’t mean doing nothing at all. A calm walk, some stretching or light yoga improves your circulation and may even speed up recovery. The point is simply that your muscles are not put under extra load until they are ready for it.

A good rule of thumb: if you train 3–4 times a week, at least 2–3 rest days is normal. The right amount is individual. If you already train with clear goals and more often, also see our tips for more experienced gym-goers.

How do you know how much is just right?

This is exactly the question that has no simple answer, because it depends on you, your life situation and your training level. That is why a good gym programme doesn’t just list training days but makes rest part of the whole.

Nostelema members can request a free training programme: our staff create it with the help of AI and check it. Explore our training programme options.

Recovery: a short checklist

✔ Get enough sleep: it is one of the most important supports for your training
✔ Build rest days into your programme every week
✔ Eat enough: too little energy can slow down recovery
✔ Drink water: good hydration supports recovery
✔ Listen to your body: tiredness and lost motivation are messages, not weak excuses
